چکیده

The Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) is frequently used to study sleepiness in various contexts. However, it exists in two versions, one with labels on every other step (version A), and one with labels on every step (version B) on the 9-point scale. To date, there are no studies examining whether these versions can be used interchangeably. The two versions were here compared in a 24 hr wakefulness study of 12 adults. KSS ratings were obtained every hour, alternating version A and B. Results indicated that the two versions are highly correlated, do not have different response distributions on labeled and unlabeled steps, and that the distributions across all steps have a high level of correspondence (Kappa = 0.73). It was concluded that the two versions are quite similar.

The effect of Bright light on Fatigue and sleepiness in night shift work nurses

Objective: In this study we assessed the effect of bright light emitted by light box on fatigue, and sleepiness in nurses. Methods: 44 healthy female shift work nurses were allocated into two groups of intervention and control. In the first stage, bright light was emitted to the nurses in the intervention group by the light box, and bright light was not emitted to the control group. In the nex...

The severity of driver fatigue in terms of line crossing: a pilot study comparing day- and night time driving in simulator

Introduction The overall aim of this study is to compare daytime driving with night-time driving looking at line crossings during self-reported sleepiness and long blinks. The hypothesis is that high levels of self-reported sleepiness (KSS 9) and long blink duration (>0.15 s) will be less associated with critical events during the day-time compared to night-time. Method The study is based on da...

Subjective sleepiness and accident risk avoiding the ecological fallacy.

The present study of sleepiness and accident risk in a HI-FI car simulator aimed to provide subject-level relative risks (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for different levels of subjective sleepiness measured with the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), 1 = very alert, 9 = very sleepy, fighting sleep, an effort to staying awake. Five male and five female shift workers, mean age 37 years, ...

Investigating the effect of night shifts rotation speed on the pattern of melatonin secretion and sleepiness among petrochemical control room operators

Introduction: This paper aims to explore the main effect of night shift rotation speed on the pattern of melatonin secretion and the sleepiness, among control room operators (CORs) in a petrochemical industry Material and method: In this study, 60 CORs operators within two different patterns, including 7 nights and 3 nights shift works were selected from a petrochemical industry to investigate...

Use of subjective and physiological indicators of sleepiness to predict performance during a vigilance task.

Sleepiness is a major risk factor for serious injury and death in accidents. Although it is important to develop countermeasures to sleepiness to reduce risks, it is equally important to determine the most effective timing for these countermeasures. To determine optimum timing for necessary countermeasures, we must be able to predict performance errors. This study examined the predictability of...
